Abstract |
The Asian moon jelly Aurelia coerulea is most likely native to the northwest Pacific Ocean. Its introduction to Europe occurred via shipping (ballast water or hull fouling) or shellfish transport. The first observation on Belgian territory was in 2022 (port of Ostend). Two years earlier, this jellyfish was already found in Zeeland (Netherlands). The jellyfish is mainly found in lagoons, harbors, and semi-enclosed brackish water systems. The species can form high densities in the short term and can thus catch large amounts of zooplankton. |
