Abstract |
The effect of the planned use of the storm surge barrier in the Oosterschelde for some additional construction projects in the area (July 1985, September 1986 and April 1987) on survival of benthic animals was investigated. Supplementary to the research of Hummel et al. (1985) the influence of 2, 4, 6 and 8 days of emersion in different seasons on the survival of some benthic intertidal species was investigated. Partly on the ground of the results of this research (high mortality among benthic animals) the scedule for the April 1987 use was changed. Investigation of the new scedule showed far less damage. The other two investigated scedules showed little damage. With regard to the effect of emersion the investigated species could be divided into 5 groups: 1). Very sensitive to emersion almost the year round: Diadumene cincta, Tharyx marioni , Nephtys hombergii and Scoloplos armiger . 2). Sensitive to longer periods of emersion throughout the year: Pygospio elegans, Sagartia troglodytes, juvenile Nereis diversicolor, juvenile Macoma balthica and Heteromastus filiformis. 3).Sensitive to longer periods of emersion in spring and summer: adult M.balthica, Cerastoderma edule , Mytilus edulis and Arenicola marina. 4). Only sensitive at extreme (high) temperatures: Hydrobia ulvae, adult Nereis diversicolor and Ostrea edulis. 5). Not sensitive to emersion: Littorina littorea. In general 2 days of emersion only caused little damage among benthic intertidal animals, especially in the 0 to 10°C temperature interval. Longer periods of emersion in the 0 to 20°C temperature interval caused a considerable mortality, whereas higher or lower temperatures were fatal to the benthic fauna. |
