Abstract
The presence ofM. galloprovincialis in Ireland is confirmed. It occurs along most of the south coast and extends northwards on the west coast as far as County Donegal. However, on shores where salinity is appreciably reduced, galloprovincialis is noticeably less abundant. Both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis exhibit considerable morphological variation according to their age and to the wide range of local conditions in which they occur. The unusually high incidence of individuals of intermediate characters in many populations, on the other hand, could possibly indicate that considerable hybridisation between these 2 mussels occurs in this part of their geographical range.
