Abstract
Stoneworts [Charophyceae] are important ecological targets for dune waters. Their former and present distribution in the Flemish coastal dunes is reviewed. Of the 11 taxa ever recorded in the area, only 7 were observed after 1997. These represent 25% of the Flemish charophyte flora. Presently, Chara contraria, C. Major and C. Vulcaris var. Loncibracteata are the most frequently occurring charophytes. Chara aspera, C. Baltica and Nitella translucens disappeared long ago, and it seems unlikely that they will reappear. Along the Belgian coast, charophytes are best represented in the Westhoek reserve and surrounding dune fragments. The coastal dune area is of considerable importance for the survival of Chara major in Flanders. Establishment of charophytes is strongly linked to pioneer conditions, which should be accounted for in management practice. In general, care should be taken to preserve a sufficient part of the oospore bank during pond maintenance. Also, every possible cause of eutrophication, for instance by large grazers, should be avoided.
