| Abstract |
Sponges of the genus Hyalonema were used as an application domain for conceiving, developing and evaluating softwares that cover a great part of the taxonomist needs: acquiring and managing descriptions, processing characters for classification purpose, building expert systems based on induction or case-based reasoning technologies for identification purpose. All these tools are relying on a new representation formalism of descriptions, which is naturally structured. The structure is elaborated by representing all observable characters in a descriptive model. The multiple interests of this methodological approach are discussed, in particular its affinity to high quality information exchanges between researchers, through networks. Some software tools already available are briefly presented. |
