Abstract |
For reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and protecting marine environment, promoting a green and eco-friendly construction material to replace traditional Portland Cement is meaningful. In this study, attention is paid to biopolymers. The calcareous silt from the South China Sea was reinforced with polysaccharide polymers such as xanthan gum, carrageenan, guar gum, sodium carboxymethyl starch and protein-based biopolymer sodium casein. It aims to find an optimal biopolymer to reinforce calcareous soils from marine area. The unconfined compression test, shear wave velocity measurement and soaking tests were performed on the biopolymer treated specimens. It was found that although the soil strength can be improved with the addition of biopolymer, the increment amplitude and principle vary with the polymer type. Guar gum treated soils have the highest strength after natural curing but show the lowest strength after soaking. The carrageenan treated soil strength increases significantly after soaking, which is inverse with the other biopolymer treated soils. The findings in this study provide an alternate idea for the earthen construction in marine area. |
