Abstract |
Knowing that strategy is fundamental to any company's ability to sustain its competitive advantage, we believe this is true for port authorities too. Therefore strategic positioning analysis for port activities is worthwhile. Based upon seaport's past output performance in terms of realised market shares, growth rates and diversification of sources of value added the triptyque of product-portfolioanalysis (PPA), shiftshare analysis (SSA) and product diversification analysis (PDA) can be used to get more insight into future development potentialities. Especially the possible detection of STU's is interesting for further use.Our PPA indicates that the Port of Ghent within the port range Le Havre-Hamburg is a "star" clearly with reference to cereals and other dry bulk categories except iron ore and coals, and also more or less for conventional cargo 's.Iron-ore traffic represents only a cash-cow function, whereas for (pit)coals some positive perspectives appear to exist. New investment programs should take this into consideration. According to the SSA it becomes clear that since 1983 Ghent has been weakening its position due to its degrading commodity-structure, and consequentIy its competitiveness power. Since 1986, however. this situation seems to alter again positively, although further efforts in the direction of higher value-added commodities is necessary. Finally, given, the evolution and position of its main competitors, these results need to be incorporated in a strategic port development plan. |
