Abstract |
After breaching of the summer dike in 1990, a former polder of 98 ha is now changing into a tidal marsh in the Scheldt (Schelde) estuary. This development is followed closely, for it serves valuable information on wetland restoration processes. The results up to now show that tidal energy is sufficient for creek formation. The new creek pattern still resembles the artificial ditch pattern, present at time of inundation. After 6 years most creeks are still widening and this will continue for at least another decade. Sediment budget calculations show that the marsh is importing sediments from the estuary. However, about 25% of the net accretion is redistribution of sediments from the eroding creeks towards the marsh surface. |
