Abstract |
Discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents and the associated biological communities (1977) profoundly changed our perception of the deep-sea. Since the initial observation at the Galapagos Spreading Center, many scientific cruises have been devoted to the study of hydrothermal vents in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, on Oceanic Ridges and in Back-Arc Basins. During the last two decades, specimens have been collected in a number of active areas and a substantial number of new taxa have been described even at a high level of the zoological classification. The aim of this handbook is to provide a short description, basic references and iconography for most of the species presently described at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. This handbook will frame a powerful tool for sorting and preliminary identification for scientists and submersible crews working at ridge crest. It is also a comprehensive introduction of the diversity of life dwelling at deep-sea vents for students and scientists. |
