Abstract
This paper summarizes the environmental changes, including water-level fluctuations, in the Black Sea during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene based upon data drawn from the literature as well as the authors' preliminary research results in the western Black Sea and Danube Delta. Evidence from the Danube Delta has been used to construct a curve of relative water-level changes in the Black Sea over the last 100,000 years. Arguments for and against the catastrophic flood hypothesis are discussed, but questions involving the rate of sea-level change and related coastline migrations during the Holocene cannot be answered confidently without more extensive study of the problem.
