Abstract
At Ostend, on the Belgian coast, a new coastal protection and a new harbour entrance are being designed. One of the possible designs is given in Figure 1, it consists of a beach nourishment, a series of new breakwaters and dikes. For the design of new constructions and sand nourishments, hydrodynamic boundary conditions (waves and water levels) had to be known at different locations near Ostend. Before this study, most statistical information was for deep water and no relationship was available between water level and wind direction. This coupling is important since some construction elements can only be attacked from a limited range of wave directions. If the water level distributions are available for different wind directions, a reduction of the water level for the desired direction range compared to the global water level distribution will be obtained. Since only a limited number of data nearshore are available, extreme value distributions at deep water were established and transformed to Ostend with a numerical wave model. At Ostend the results were interpreted in order to get directional wave and water level distributions. The numerical model was calibrated with the wave data from a buoy at Ostend. This paper describes the derivation of the extreme wave characteristics for the different elements in the project.
