Abstract
In coastal areas, and certainly in the Belgian coastal plain, hydrochemical investigations are impeded by the presence of fine-grained sediments such as clay, silt and peat. Resistivity measurements in boreholes have, until present, only been calibrated for sandy formations. The relationship between the resistivity and the pore-water quality in fine-grained sediments is not clear. Representative groundwater samples from these formations are difficult to obtain. In this paper a fast and effective method for obtaining groundwater samples from fine-grained sediments is described: the high pressure filtration technique. The method is applied to a study area in the western Belgian coastal plain : the Yser plain. The pore-water samples thus obtained were used to calibrate the borehole resistivity measurements in fine-grained formations. The results of the chemical analysis of the pore-water samples have led to a better understanding of the chemical and physical processes influencing groundwater quality.
