Abstract |
The Adriatic Sea is influenced by two distinct factors: the northern part is dominated by neritic influences and neritic water masses, whereas the southern part is influenced by the open sea and the Mediterranean water masses. The periodic fluctuations of these influences are associated with variations of ecological circumstances and movements of some of the organisms. These facts control the relation between water movements and the distribution of marine organisms and benthic biocoenoses in the Adriatic.A branch of the principal Mediterranean Current flows along the Adriatic, resulting in boundaries between the various ecological conditions; large fluctuations in temperature and salinity in the north Adriatic create a barrier for the stenothermic and stenohaline organisms.Endemic, warm-water species of the Mediterranean are present primarily in the south Adriatic and less in the middle Adriatic; most of the endemic species of the Adriatic Sea are restricted to the north though some occur in different regions of the Adriatic. |
