Abstract |
The growth of Prorocentrum lima, a toxic algae producing okadaic acid, has been followed in culture media with a variety of organic enrichments obtained from soils and composts of different origins. Two strains were studied and did not respond in the same way to the enrichments. Each strain also responds differently to each type of enrichment. Compost extracts, rich in organic matters, induce faster growth (growth rate 0.07/day) than extracts of soils poor in organic matter (growth rate 0.016/day). Such findings may contribute to explain the mechanisms inducing or triggering bloom developments which occur in neritic and coastal waters where terrigenous run-off mostly influences the organic content of seawater. |
