Abstract
Marine spatial planning (MSP) can be broadly seen as a planning process to designate or identify preferential zones for various activities at sea with the aim to reduce user conflicts. As a tool, MSP can also be used to designate marine protected areas (MPAs) and to support area-based nature conservation as well as introduce a long-term vision to regulate new activities at sea. MSP is considered to be an appropriate tool and process to achieve an ecosystem-based sustainable management of activities at sea.
