Abstract
Capture fisheries have reshaped global marine ecosystems, particularly since large-scale industrialization and expansion began in the 1950s. Despite widespread documented declines in fish stocks, fisheries catch data monitoring has historically been highly mis- and underreported in most countries in the world. The Sea Around Us project addressed this issue by using available information and expertise to reconstruct these previously unaccounted for catches, under the core assumption that “no data” does not equal “zero catch.” This new data has informed novel analyses around the world to provide a clearer picture of human impacts on marine ecosystems, and a more realistic baseline for management and research efforts aimed at achieving more sustainable future oceans.
