Abstract |
Notwithstanding the early interest shown in 1891 and 1902, the study of the systematics and ecology of marine Oligochaeta of Bermuda has been neglected. A survey, conducted by one of the authors (P.L.) in 1973, was suggested by the unique location of Bermuda. This paper records 2 Naididae, 5 Tubificidae, 8 Enchytraeidae and one Megascolecidae. 14 new records are listed, as well as mew findings on the only 2 spp already know from the region, Pontodrilus bermudensis Beddard, 1891 and Stephensoniella marina (Moore, 1902). Of these 16 spp, 6 are known from Europe and the eastern coast of North America. P. bermudensis is circummundave on seashores in the tropics and subtripics. 2 new spp are described: Lumbricillus sterreri sp.nov. and Marionina swedmarki sp.nov. The tubificids and enchytraeids are abundant in coral sands of intertidal beaches. Few, but interesting spp (Clitellio, Grania) live subtidally, mainly in coarse coral sands. Different categories of habitats are briefly described. The marine oligichaetes display a great intraspecific variability and new indications of this variability are given. One allopatric population of the eachytraeid Grania has been treated as a subspp: Grania macrochaeta bermudensis Erseus and Lasserre,1976. |
