Abstract: |
De voornaamste onderzoeksinteresse van de groep Gedragsecologie en Ecofysiologie (BECO) is de studie van de oorzaken en gevolgen van variatie in gedragskenmerken tussen individuen. Een belangrijke uitdaging in de biologie is het begrijpen van de interacties tussen een organisme en zijn omgeving. Gedrag bevindt zich in de centrale kern van dit verband, aangezien het de ontwikkeling, fysiologie, ecologische dynamiek, milieukeuze en evolutie beïnvloedt en ondervindt. Daarom kan gedrag worden beschouwd als een sleutelcomponent van de integratieve biologie in een door de mens veranderde wereld. De groep bestudeert gedrag simultaan vanuit vier invalshoeken (mechanismen, ontwikkeling, adaptieve functie, fylogenie) en hanteert daarmee een integratief en interdisciplinair kader. Daarbij past de onderzoeksgroep theoretische en methodologische inzichten uit diergedrag en gedragsecologie toe op natuurbeschermingsbiologie en biologie van veranderingen in het aardsysteem. Het overkoepelende doel van BECO is te verklaren en idealiter te voorspellen hoe individuen en soorten gedragsmatig reageren op door de mens veroorzaakte snelle milieuveranderingen. Het meeste onderzoek is gericht op terrestrische vogels, hoewel een toenemend aantal studies zich richt op mariene soorten. Wat het mariene onderzoek betreft, wordt de voortplantings- en foerageerecologie bestudeerd bij verschillende meeuwensoorten en Amerikaanse fregatvogels, waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van zowel veldwaarnemingen/experimenten als GPS-volgtechnologieën. De groep bestudeert ook de rol van verschillende zeevogelsoorten als biomonitor van vervuiling en milieuveranderingen. In deze context onderzoekt de groep zowel indicatoren als gevolgen van blootstelling, met inbegrip van immuunfunctie, endocrinologie, voortplanting en de expressie van visuele en akoestische kenmerken. Speciale aandacht wordt besteed aan het gebruik van vogelveren als een niet-destructieve indicator van zowel de blootstelling aan als de effecten (stresshormonen) van verontreinigende stoffen. Met behulp van gearchiveerde collecties museumveren worden temporele trends in een groot aantal verontreinigende stoffen bestudeerd. |
