Abstract:
Het laboratorium voor Chemische Analyse (LCA) van de Universiteit Gent werd opgericht in 1992. De groep maakt deel uit van de Vakgroep Veterinaire Volksgezondheid en Voedselveiligheid en heeft 35 jaar ervaring in het opsporen van residuen en contaminanten in matrices van dierlijke oorsprong (BELAC geaccrediteerd onder ISO 17025). Vanuit deze historisch opgebouwde expertise beoogt LCA om de meest recente, gevoelige en accurate analytische methodologie te benutten om gekende en ongekende residuen, contaminanten met inbegrip van micropolluenten of voedingscomponenten, derivaten of metabolieten hiervan te detecteren, kwantificeren of identificeren in diverse matrices. Dit alles gebeurt met het oog op het verzekeren van de voedselveiligheid en de kwaliteit van voeding en leefmilieu. Deze visie wordt eveneens doorgetrokken in de huidige en toekomstige lopende onderzoeksprojecten.

Een deel van het wetenschappelijk onderzoek dat uitgevoerd wordt aan LCA heeft betrekking op het mariene of estuariene milieu:
- De analyse van micropolluenten in de Belgische kustzone;
- De voedselveiligheid van vis en zeevruchten;
- De bepaling van endocriene verstoring in het Schelde-estuarium;
- Metabolisatie en transfer van mariene toxines van algen naar mollusken en het milieu.

In de toekomst wordt de verdere ontwikkeling van methodes voor de multi-residu of multi-contaminant analyse van water- en biotamonsters met behulp van hoge-resolutie massaspectrometrie (MS) vooropgesteld. Hierbij zullen in het bijzonder opkomende polluenten worden opgenomen zoals farmaca, ftalaten, PFCs, fenolen, etc. Daarnaast worden ook de analytische aspecten die gepaard gaan met onderzoek naar mariene toxines verder uitgewerkt. De metabolomics-aanpak die reeds in diverse andere onderzoeksdomeinen binnen het labo wordt aangewend, zal ook hier als basis fungeren voor vernieuwend onderzoek.

Gezien de lage concentraties van de te analyseren componenten (ppt of ppb) en de complexiteit van de matrices is hoogtechnologische apparatuur vereist. Het laboratorium beschikt hiervoor over 1 LC-MSn en 1 U-HPLC-QqQ-MS/MS die de identificatie en de kwantificatie van componenten en hun residuen en/of metabolieten in complexe matrices mogelijk maakt. Daarnaast beschikt LCA eveneens over hoge resolutie U-HPLC-(Q) Orbitrap-MS en U-HPLC-Q-q-ToF systemen, die ook multi-component screening, biomerker en metabolome studies mogelijk maken. LCA participeert in tal van nationale en enkele internationale projecten en werkt intensief samen met het laboratorium Milieutoxicologie en Aquatische Ecologie (Ugent) en de Operationele Directie Natuurlijk Milieu van het KBIN.
