Abstract
This project is a continuation of the research at Skallingen where field investigations on sediment transport and beach/shoreface morphodynamics have been carried out since 1994. Skallingen is presently severely eroding (Figure 1) due to a strong positive littoral drift gradient and approximately 650000 m3 of sand is lost from the barrier each year. At Vejers, immediately north of Blåvands Huk, the beaches are accreting. A strongly negative littoral drift gradient exists and the shoreline has been prograding in the past (Figure 2). The annual input of sand to the beaches north of Blåvands Huk is probably more than 2 million m3 per year. This sand is being supplied by the southward littoral drift. However, over the past 30 years the accretion of the dunes is only in the order of 5% of the sand supply. One of the main research issues of this project is to determine the sediment budget at Vejers and where and why these large amounts of sand are eventually deposited.
