Abstract
this illustrated guide to installing the www-ISIS-ASFA (release 1.1) software system in a "stand-alone environment" is intended for use by the ASFA Partners. The instructions apply to two situations: 1)"first-time installation or 2) installation to "upgrade" the previous release-1 software. The www-ISIS-ASFA software is based on Web technology, and it can be used as a tool: (i) to create, store and search bibliographic references (or records) in a database, which may reside either in a stand-alone computer environment, or a network (intra/internet) computer environment; (ii) to prepare ASFA bibliographic records (i.e. Using the Data Entry sub-system) for submission to the ASFA Publisher for inclusion in the main ASFA database file; and (iii) to store, search and manage bibliographic records downloaded from the ASFA main database (e.g. ASFA CD-ROM) (not yet developed).Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) is an abstracting/indexing service covering the world's literature on the science, technology and management of the marine, brackishwater, and freshwater environments, including their socio-economic and legal aspects. ASFA was established in 1970 by the Food and Aquaculture Organizaztion of the United Nations (FAO), together with a commercial publisher, and a number of National centres (i.e. ASFA Partners) that wished to establish a computerized information system dealing with literature on aquatic scioences and fisheries. The aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) Bibliographic Database contains more than one million bibliographic references to the world's aquatic science literature accessioned since 1971.ASFA is produced as a co-operative effort by the United Nations Co-sponsoring Partners, the National and International Partners, and the Publishing Partner. The objective is to disseminate bibliographic information on the science, technology and management of the marine and freshwater environments to the world community. All ASFA Partners are represented on the ASFA Advisory Board, for which FAO provides the Secretariat.Input to the ASFA database is prepared by the network of ASFA Partners who are together responsible for the monitoring of more than 5000 serial publications as well as books, reports, conference proceedings and grey literature. The collective input is sent to the Publisher of ASFA (CSA), in machine-readable format, where it is processed by computer and merged to create a master file (the ASFA Bibliographic Database). From master file, the ASFA Information Products are produced (e.g. ASFA-1, ASFA-2 and ASFA-3 printed abstracts journals: Internet databases; and ASFA CD-ROM). They are distributed to (or made available to) the ASFA Partners on a monthly/quarterly basis for use as a source of data in local, national or regional information services. The Bibliographic Reference describing each document in the ASFA database contains: a detailed bibliographic citation; abstracts, and a set of indexing terms.During the preperation of the bibliographic reference, it is the responsibility of the ASFA Partners: to identify the data elements making up the bibliographic citation, to write/edit the abstract, and to choose the indexing terms. To assist the ASFA Partners in the preperation of input (i.e. To ensure the consistency necessaru in a computerized and de-centralized system like ASFA) standardized cataloguing, abstracting and indexing procedures have been prepared and published under the title: ASFA Reference Series.
