Despite its restricted coastline, Belgium has a lot of important interactions with the North Sea. The management of these - often rival - activities is a tremendous task which requires a policy strategy based on at least three complementary main ideas: (a) a scientific approach mainly achieved by mathematical modelling as a predictive and optimizing tool ; (b) the acquisition of field data needed for the models and for the assessment of the existing level of marine pollution as well as possible trends ; (c) the international cooperation and the enforcement of the decisions being taken within the framework of the international conventions.
