Abstract
The influence of macrofauna on the vertical distribution of meiobenthos was studied in an Avicennia marina mangrove over a period of two months. The Avicennia site was located in the upper intertidal zone of Gazi Bay, Kenya. Exclusions were performed by the use of cube cages with walls of plastic net with a mesh width of 1mm. In order to evaluate possible procedure-effects, partial cages (i.e. cages with one side left open) were placed in the field. Three replicas were taken from three treatments (cage, partial cage and blanco). The experimental units were placed in the field following the Randomized Block Design. The meiobenthos was sampled before the cages and half cages were placed in the field, five days after the placement and a month after the placement. The meiofaunal component was measured qualitatively and quantitatively. Statistical ANOVA-test was applied to test for a significant effect on the meiobenthos. Confirmation was eventually given by some other tests : correlation (Pearson r) test, Global effect-analysis, TWINSPAN analysis and different correspondence analysis. No significant effect from the meiobenthic association was observed. Three new harpacticoid (Crustacea, Copepoda) species from the genus Leptocaris T. Scott (1899) were described in detail.
