Abstract
The brown shrimp Crangon crangon was kept under normoxia and moderate (40% saturation) hypoxia. Haemocyanin concentrations were measured and the data segregated according to moult stage of the animals. The mean, normoxic haemocyanin concentration was 0.5-0.6 mM/l for intermoult animals and this increased to 0.8 mM/l and 1.3 mM/l after 1 and 2 week's hypoxia, respectively. During the moult cycle, haemocyanin concentration varied in normoxia from 0.3 mM/l (stage A) to 0.75 mM/l (stage D 3). Haemocyanin was synthesized under hypoxia in all moult stages at about 5-6% of the normoxic mean value per day. Starved Crangon showed a rapid drop in haemocyanin levels.
