| Abstract |
These proceedings present selected papers from the International Conference on 'Woody Biomass as an Energy Source - Challenges in Europe' held on 25-27 September in Joensuu, Finland. The main aims of the conference were : 1) review the current understanding of the role and potential of woody biomass as an energy source in Europe; 2) discuss the means for integrating energy production in European forestry; 3) clarify the connection between bioenergy and rural development; 4) analyse the role of bioenergy in forest management and timber production; 5) examine the importance of bioenergy in global carbon balance; and 6) strengthen the existing, and promote future, research co-operation. |
