Abstract |
The larvae of the freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), were fed Artemia nauplii (Great Salt Lake strain) diet enriched with w3-HUFAs, soya lecithin, and vitamins E and C. A significant increase in growth (dry weight), survival, and rate of development of the larvae was observed when the levels of w3-HUFAs were increased. The stress resistance of the prawns was greatly enhanced by w3-HUFA enrichment of the Artemia diet. Enrichment with soya lecithine, vitamins E and C had no effect on the growth or survival of the larvae. The results suggest that whereas the enrichment of Artemia nauplii with w3-HUFAs has a major effect on the Macrobrachium larvae, no advantage is conferred by enrichment with either soya lecithin or vitamins E and C. |
