Abstract
To gain understanding of the three{dimensional water motion, sediment transport and trapping in tidally dominated estuaries, a new idealized model is developed. This model extends the iFlow model [Dijkstra et al., 2017] that has been successfully employed to study the width-averaged dynamics in these systems, by allowing for dynamic interactions between the lateral and longitudinal dynamics. The model uses the ap- proach proposed in the three{dimensional model of Kumar et al. [2017], but aims to extend it to include more realistic geometries and bathymetries, and better parameterizations of physical processes. In this report, the improvements that are necessary to reach this goal are discussed. It turns out that, to allow for a systematic use of the approach proposed by Kumar et al. [2017], the following improvements are essential: use of high order elements (p > 10), adaptive grid re_nement, and use of curved elements that allow for a smooth representation of the planform geometry.
