Abstract
The new phylogenetic system of the order Polycladida results from the comparing description of the anatomy of all hitherto known polyclads. The order is subdivided in the suborders Acotylea and Cotylea. The condition of the prostatic vesicle to the ejaculatory duct and its interior constitution are believed to be of highest phylogenetic value. On the basis of the orientation of the prostatic vesicle to the male tract being free, interpolated or absent, the Acotylea are subdivided in the Craspedommatidea, Schematommatidea, and Emprosthommatidea, respectively. In the new system 26 families are included within Acotylea and 16 families within the Cotylea. Of the species dealt with, 7 are regarded as new to polyclad systematics, and these are: Discoprosthides patagoniensis n. sp., Pseudostylochus mactanensis n. sp., Notocirrus neupommerensis n. sp., Didangia mactanensis n. sp., Chiliplana taltalensis n. sp., Pseudoceros langemaakensis n. sp., and Stygolepta hjalmari n. sp. The holopelagic species Chatziplana grubei (GRAFF, 1892) n. comb., Planocera pellucida (MERTENS, 1833), Leptoplanella californica (WOODWORTH, 1894) n. comb., and Gnesioceros sargassicola (MERTENS, 1833) and the boreal species Leptoplana tremellaris (0. F. MULLER, 1774) living on marine sediments are re-described. Re-investigation of whole mounts of Planocera simrothi determined by GRAFF (Paratypes of Zoological Museum Hamburg, 1892) turns out to be true Planocera pellucida, hence P. simrothi GRAFF, 1892 is synonymous with P. pellucida.
