Abstract:
Het Environmental Hydroacoustics Laboratorium (EHL) voert zowel fundamenteel als toegepast onderzoek naar de karakterisatie van mariene/aquatische omgevingen en ecosystemen waarbij gebruik gemaakt wordt van afstandswaarnemingen, actieve en passieve akoestische technieken en optische methoden. Sinds zijn oprichting, heeft het lab geparticipeerd in internationale interdisciplinaire projecten, voornamelijk met betrekking tot globale milieuproblemen. Ook werden er regelmatig mariene experimenten uitgevoerd in verschillende delen van de wereld.

Het huidig onderzoek omvat de volgende thema’s:
- Het gebruik van akoestische technieken om de kennis van pelagische en bentische ecosystemen te verbeteren;
- Het ontwikkelen van akoestische systemen voor de karakterisatie van oppervlaktesedimenten en lagen in de ondergrond;
- Niet-invasief akoestisch onderzoek naar de dynamiek van vloeibaar slib en geassocieerde processen in estuariene en kustgebonden omgevingen (bv. de monding van de Amazonerivier);
- Het ontwerpen en testen van onderzeese digitale holografische microscopie voor de in-situ observatie van plankton en partikels in visserijonderzoek (West-Afrika);
- Geïntegreerde akoestische monitoring van mariene habitats om de primaire productie en biodiversiteit te kunnen beoordelen (zeegrasvelden in de Tyrreense zee; zeewiervelden in ZO Australië);
- Passieve akoestische waarneming van sedimenttranssport in lagunes en kustgebonden omgevingen (bv. Venetië en de kust van de Noordzee);
- Akoestische exploratie van submariene archeologische sites en de geo-akoestische karakterisatie van bepaalde lagen;
- Akoestische tomografie van objecten op het continentaal plat en kustgebonden oceanische processen (Ushant getijden front, NW Frankrijk; diep thermisch front, ZO Brazilië);
- Een uitgebreide beoordeling van mariene sedimenten door middel van een combinatie van hydrografische opmetingen en geo-akoestische inversie (bv. Caraïben en de Middellandse Zee).

In het kader van projectdeelnames worden er door de groep ook methoden en algoritmes ontwikkeld om een waaier aan problemen met betrekking tot data-assimilatie en inversieproblemen op te lossen. Verder verricht EHL pionierswerk in de toepassing van de optimal control theory en Bayesiaanse statistiek. Andere kernactiviteiten van het labo betreffen het modelleren van de akoestische voortplanting en verstrooiing (met inbegrip van de ontwikkeling van benaderingen voor complexe media en multifase materialen) ter ondersteuning van experimenten op zee. Voor sommige materialen, zoals silex en biologisch weefsel, worden ultrasone meettechnieken ontwikkeld om de intrinsieke akoestische eigenschappen te kunnen bepalen van monsters die worden meegebracht van expedities. De sedimentologische en lithostratigrafische analyses van korte sedimentkernen worden uitgevoerd in samenwerking met STEP, ULB en buitenlandse laboratoria. EHL heeft een uitgebreide expertise in het toepassen van doorgedreven signaalverwerking op metingen van geluidsvoortplanting, soundscape recording (bv. geluid van schepen en biologische geluidsproductie) en ruwe backscatterdata van single of multibeam echosounders. Door uitgebreide experimenten op zee, heeft het labo expertise vergaard in het ontwikkelen van akoestische en oceanografische sensorpaketten. Het personeel en de partners van EHL zijn gespecialiseerd in akoestiek, geofysica, mariene biologie, signaal- en beeldverwerking en oceanische ingenieurskunde.
