Abstract:
Het laboratorium voor Toxicologie en Farmacologie bestaat uit twee belangrijke onderzoeksgebieden:
  • Forensische Toxicologie;
  • Drug Discovery en Farmacologie.


De onderzoeksdoelstellingen van Forensische Toxicologie zijn gericht op de optimalisatie van analytische detectiemethoden/tools en de detectie van vluchtige ontledingen. De belangrijkste praktijk van deze subdivisie is de dienstverlening in juridische dossiers als expertise- en onderzoekscentrum op verzoek van het Ministerie van Justitie. De onderzoeksdoelstellingen van Drug Discovery and Pharmacology zijn voornamelijk gericht op onderzoek van gif van giftige dieren zoals spinnen, zeeanemonen, kegelslakken, schorpioenen, cnidaria, etc. Omdat deze gifpeptiden vaak werken op ionenkanalen van het menselijk lichaam, zijn het interessante verbindingen voor de ontwikkeling van bijvoorbeeld analgetica, geneesmiddelen tegen kanker, geneesmiddelen voor neurologische aandoeningen zoals multiple sclerose, de ziekte van Parkinson, de ziekte van Alzheimer, etc.
