Serdar is a Professor of Biology and Head of the Hydrobiology Division, Department of Biology, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Adıyaman University (Türkiye). His research focuses on the systematics and taxonomy of meiobenthic Crustacea, particularly harpacticoid copepods, as well as fish-parasitic copepods of the Eastern Mediterranean. He follows an integrative taxonomic approach that combines detailed morphology with DNA barcoding, molecular species delimitation and molecular phylogenetics, with a special interest in species complexes and cryptic speciation. He has described several new harpacticoid species from Turkish coasts, contributed to the revision of genera and species complexes, and has led or taken part in national research projects funded by TÜBİTAK, including work on Antarctic benthic invertebrates. He is a member of the World Association of Copepodologists and has served on its Executive Council since 2025.

As an Associate Editor of the World of Copepods, Serdar is mainly interested in keeping the taxonomy up to date by tracking synonymies, new combinations and nomenclatural changes, and in improving the coverage of copepod records from Turkish waters and the Eastern Mediterranean. He is also a member of the Turkish Copepoda Researchers Group (copepoda.tr) and is involved in developing an interactive identification key for the Harpacticoida of Turkey.
