Abstract
The objectives of this project were:
- To narrow the gap between the behaviour-oriented models and the process-based models.
- To explore and to expand the applicability of ASMITA and ESTMORF.
- To develop guidelines for determining the model parameters of ASMITA / ESTMORF.
The ultimate goal was to render the semi-empirical, long-term morphological models for estuaries and tidal lagoons which were developed by WL-Delft Hydraulics more suitable as tool for consultancy purposes.
To achieve these objectives, the following activities were conducted in 2003:
1. Application of ASMITA to the Delta Coast in the southwestern Netherlands. An important issue in this study was how to define and deal with the ebb-tidal deltas.
2. Research on the morphological development of Lister-Tief and the application of ASMITA to this tidal basin. This tidal basin in the German / Danish Wadden Sea seems to behave differently than the Dutch Wadden Sea basins. Despite the sea-level rise, the basin appears to have exported instead of imported sediment as was the case in the Dutch Wadden Seas.
3. Publication of previous results from research on long-term morphological modelling of estuaries and tidal lagoons. Two journal papers/book segments (Stive and Wang, 2003, Van Goor et al, 2003), and four papers on the proceedings of international conferences (Nidoroda et al, 2003, Shi et al, 2003, Jeuken et al, 2003 Wang et al, 2003) were all realised in 2003.
4. Development of a model for predicting dredging requirements in the Western Scheldt. The model is based on the single-element ASMITA model concept. The model appears to reproduce the dredging records in the past well and explains why the methods used up until now overestimate the dredging requirement following the last deepening of the navigation channel. The model with its preliminary application is published in a conference paper (Wang et al, 2003).
The model is now being used in the PROSES project Strategic EIA for the Western Scheldt.
5. Integrating evaluation. Such an evaluation is meant to arrive at guidelines for determining the model parameters in ESTMORF and ASMITA. An identification of all the ASMITA and ESTMORF applications has been performed but the integrating evaluation has not yet been completed.
The significance of nodal tide variation to the long-term morphological development of a morphologically slow estuary (Westerschelde) and a fast estuary (Humber), and the ability of semi-empirical models such as ESTMORF and ASMITA to simulate the influence of nodal tide variation.
