Abstract |
The inner-delta of the Zaire river's maritime reach has been surveyed intensively during the last 23 years in order to develop a method to predict it’s morphologic changes and to improve the dredging operations in the navigation channel giving access to the harbours of Boma and Matadi. Flow and sediment gauging form part of the tools of the prediction method; they produce interesting data for testing sediment transport theories. The paper presents results of the application of f our theories or approaches: Schoklitsch, Shields, Meyer-Peter & Muller and Bagnold. Besides the calculation of the cross-sectional sediment transport rates for establishing the rating curves for the main-gauging sections, Bagnold's approach has been adapted for application in local stations in view of predicting morphologic changes. The calculations are in fairly good agreement with the measurements. |
