Abstract
    In the Norwegian channel, the seafloor topography is of mixed tectonic and glacial origin. Subbottom profiles show the presence of different sedimentary units of which the thickness and distribution was mapped. The sedimentary succession is built up by 2 glacial deposits followed by a well-stratified late-Weichselian early-Holocene layer which gradually changes into a finer Holocene deposit. The youngest glacial deposit is related to Weichselian glaciers of Skandinavian origin that flowed west - and northward along the main axis of the channel. The distribution of the late- and postglacial units points to a tidal circulation pattern in the North Sea similar to the present one. On the western slope of the Channel north of Egersund numerous pockmarks occur, whereas on the southern slope of the Skaggerak shadow zones are found probably due to the presence of gas or gravel. The acoustic records also give evidence for the occurrence of late Quaternary faulting.
