Abstract
Site selection in the mariculture finfish industry has traditionally been based on such characteristics as proximity to land and degree of shelter. Several such sites, at least in the Irish experience, have been abandoned, after considerable investment of money and effort, as their productivity was shown to be short-lived. This was due to a large extent to the unsuitability of the site in terms of its hydrography which quickly led to the disimprovement of benthic conditions and subsequent fish disease problems. This paper presents a suite of characteristics which the prospective site should have and which the developer should quantify. An integral part of this assessment is the development of a computer-based hydrodynamic model which can be used as a powerful tool by the farm manager. The paper concludes with a recommended monitoring programme and possible management protocols are outlined.
