Abstract
To study environmental effects on the reproductive cycle of the pumpkinseed sunfish it was necessary to sex the fish and to evaluate the stage of their gonadal maturity. Since no precise, reliable field method has been established, a simple method of aspirative gonadal puncture was developed using a syringe appended to a cetheter adapted to the size of the urogenital opening. By microscopal examination of a sample (a few ovocytes or some sperm) and in reference to histological studies on the established stages of gonadal maturity, a gross maturity scale could be developed. This method proved reliable (three errors on 246 fish) and suitable to other species (carp, tilapia, turbot). The main advantage of this technique is to leave the reproductive mechanism of the fish unaltered.
