Abstract
This work forms a dissertation on inertia phenomena in navigation locks. It gives both insight and formulas on how the filling or emptying of the lock chamber is inuenced by the inertia. The results are useful in the design stage of a lock, when hand calculations form a quick and powerful tool. Also to evaluate existing locks, it can be useful.

There are three ways how the inertia effects are studied. First, analytical work is performed, which ultimately leads to insight and approximate formulas. Then these results are checked using a 1D numerical software package, LOCKSIM. Finally, an experimental setup is used, so that real physics can be observed. These three methods (analytical, numerical and experimental) make the dissertation more extensive, but provide a sound support for the different conclusions.

In this work formulas are presented for all important parameters, as well as working methods on how to use them for more complex geometries. Since the filling time (being one of the studied variables) is an important parameter for economics, it is a reasonable assumption that this work will find use in practice.
