Abstract |
Photosynthesis was studied in the Oosterschelde estuary (SW Netherlands) using 14C-carbon fixation and PAM chlorophyll fluorescence Nutrient limitation of phytoplankton was estimated from concentrations of dissolved nutrients and nutrient ratio's, and from the maximum photosystem II (PSII) quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm). It was found that the nutrient concentrations were distributed rather homogenously in the estuary However, in the eastern compartment, which has the longest residence time, nutrients disappeared earlier than elsewhere. A decrease in phosphate and silicate concentration to limiting levels was followed by a decrease in maximum PSII quantum efficiency, although the decrease in Fv/Fm occurred 2 weeks later. An increase in phosphate levels coincided with an increase in Fv/Fm, which remained high for the rest of the year, despite low DIN levels later in summer and early autumn. At low irradiances there was a linear relationship between the rate of C- fixation and the rate of PSII electron transport (ETR). However, at higher irradiances the relationship became non-linear. The possible reasons for this non-linearity are discussed. |
