Abstract |
Within the framework of the project "Alternative maintenance measures for beach nourishment: monitoring of a pilot site", the contribution of underwater nourishment to reduce maintenance, and thus extending the lifetime of beach nourishment along the Belgium coast, without compromising coastal safety, is to be assessed. This is based on an integrated approach, including field measurement campaigns, numerical modelling and the definition and evaluation of a number of morphological indicators. This paper refers to XBeach model software set-up and application to the project site. This aimed for the discussion of the short-term morphological effects of three storm events, which occurred at the project site between 2013 and 2015. Because of the long fetches only existing through the north direction, for all the storms, the highest observed waves were from the north and northwest directions. The relative comparison of the simulated morphological response to the events showed that the number of high energetic events or their duration might have an higher effect on the morphology than their maximum significant wave height. |
