Abstract
Coastal habitats and their problems are reviewed and integrated coastal zone management in Belgium is discussed. Habitats on the Belgian coast are under pressure form recreation, pollution and lack of effective regulation, despite the importance of several types of habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. New management structures are required which are capable of preserving what remains of the Belgian coastal resource and restoring damaged areas using sound ecological principles. The best means of achieving this is through integrated coastal zone management which involves all coastal interest groups. With a combined effort and emphasis on information and public participation, what remains of the coastal ecosystem may be saved.
