Abstract |
The distribution and morphology of E. charybdaea in the north-eastern Atlantic is studied. This typically Mediterranean species was previously known in the Atlantic only from the Cape Verde Islands (St. Vincent) and 2 stations off the Moroccan coast, but is now shown to occur in SW Norway (Dusevigen), on the French Channel coast (Roscoff), and on the shelf of the British Isles (See King, 1974). The syntypes of Phoxichilus laevis Grube, 1871, have been reexamined. The majority of the specimens and those originally figured are E. spinosa, but a female of E. charybdaea from Roscoff is among the series. Numerous specimens of E. spinosa from the Roscoff region allowed a study to be made of its morphological variability. The number of cement-gland pores and the proboscis shape are not characters which distinguish E. spinosa from E. charybdaea. The first record of E. charybdaea from the (northern) Adriatic is noted here. |
