Abstract
This study treats the green algae, belonging to the Codiales collected by phycologists of the University of Ghent in Kenya, Zanzibar and the Seychelles Islands from 1985 to 1993. The description and results will be incorporated in a flora of the Chlorophyta from the western Indian Ocean. Such a marine macroalgal flora is still unexisting, although indispensable as the basis for ulterior ecological field-work, monitoring and managing coastal ecosystems. The Kenyan coast has been sampled fairly thoroughly: material was collected during 9 field trips over a period of 8 years. This evidently results in the largest number of species (20 on 20) found in the 3 study areas. The number of species from Zanzibar is limited to 7; this is most probably due to the single collecting period of only two weeks. One month of collecting around the Seychelles already resulted in 14 different species. The species lists are undoubtedly incomplete. This is partly due to the reduced number of collecting sites and the patchiness of algal distribution. Moreover, the subtidal zone situated on the seaward side of the fringing reef still remains almost unstudied because of the limited availability of diving equipment and the restricted accessibility of this surf-exposed biotope. Of the 15 species mentioned by LAWSON (1980) from Kenya, only Codium dwarkense was not observed in the collections of Ghent. On the other hand Bryopsis plumose f. plumosa (new for the Indian Ocean), Codium cicatrix, C. geppii, C. repens and Trichosolen sp. are mentioned for the first time from Kenya. Bryopsis indica, Codium capitatum and C. extricatum had not been reported from Tanzania (Zanzibar) yet. From the 3 Bryposis-species recorded by JAASUND (1976) in his Tanzanian field guide, Bryopsis pennata var. leprieurii and B. pennata var. secunda had not been collected by us for the present. A thorough study of the macroalgae around the Seychelles Islands is also still missing. Only 5 species of Codiales (Boodleopsis pusilla, Bryopsis pennata, Codium formosanum, C. geppii and C. tomentosum) are mentioned in the list of KALUGINA-GUTNIK et al. (1992); 3 of these were not collected during the Netherlands Indian Ocean Expedition. Consequently the 12 remaining species in our list are new for the Seychelles, except for Boodleopsis pusilla and Codium geppii. On Bird Island typical Codium taylorii – specimens were collected. This species was described from Thailand by EGEROD (1974). Supplementary field work around the Seychelles should prove the species richness of this area. This research results in 4 “new” species for the area: Bryopsis plumosa f. plumosa and the characteristic growth form of Codium taylorii are new for the Indian Ocean; Bryopsis sp. and Codium sp. might be new to science. The Seychelles Archipelago appears to be the less known region and hence the most interesting study-area. The Kenyan coast is also strikingly rich in species.
